Stephen King

    Incredible

    5 stars

Stephen King is a genius. The first part is a memoir, written in short pieces. His life is intriguing, I would have read it just for that. The rest is advice on writing, which he intertwines with his past and his own successes and pitfalls. My only complaint is that the material of the cover shows fingerprints and smudges (I attempted to show in the picture), but it has no effect on the book, so it's really not a big deal. Highly recommend for writers and non-writers alike.

    Incredible Incredible Incredible

Very disappointed. I have an original copy of this book that is pretty beat up so I thought I would replace it and when it arrived it had a completely different cover and only 3 short stories. Rage had been omitted from the collection. So if you're looking for the full book this is not it. Buyer be where

    Very disappointed

    Just awesome.

Anyone looking to write in any form should read this book by one of the masters.

My favorite part is when King recounts getting the call from his agent about the six-figure bonus for "Carrie," as the author looked around his "s***ty house."

    Writing is work.

    The Grail Book

    5 stars

The Grail Book, it is that good. Let me start by saying I have read dozens of books "on writing" and they are all mostly the same. They talk about plotting your book, outlining it, which voice to use, first person, second person, etc. In essence they all talk about the mechanics of writing which is all fine and good if you are planning to write a "literary novel" which nobody will ever read and you will be lucky to make a single $100 bill out of. If you want to write mainstream popular fiction; however, (you know the kind that actually sells) then this book is for you.
King believes that book ideas are not plotted, rather they are found much like a lost relic or bone is found in the ground. He sometimes starts writing with no clue of the eventual ending of the story. The book literary makes itself. For example in the book Green Mile King was not sure whether the arrested criminal (who was actually innocent) would die or live in the end. The story or (fossil) literary wrote itself.
If you can have just one book on the craft of writing I recommend this book. It was the techniques in this book which led to the inspiration of my own book, "The Gambler," by Steven Black.

    Vivid Visions

    5 stars

Reading this book brought me some of the most vivid visions that I have received in a while from literature. Even though some moments were lost on me as far as what they would look like in detail, Stephen King had such a way of sharing the visions from his mind to mine.

    Vivid Visions

I’m knocking off 2 stars because it was damaged and I thought it was going to be a brand new book. Had a crease too. Wasn’t even wrapped or anything. Otherwise it’s a 5 Star story! Read the whole series twice. This was to be a gift.

    Damaged! But great series....

Purchased the newer paperback assuming all the stories listed in the description would be included SINCE THEYRE IN THE DESCRIPTION but was saddened to find that Rage is not included. I had heard that it wasn’t put in later editions but, like I said, I assumed since it was in the description that this copy had it.
The book itself is in great condition and arrived in a timely manner, just wish there were separate descriptions for different editions.

Newer paperback does not include Rage

I liked that it played At there original script, but left room for creative license. I don't usually read King, since they are horrors.
But I loved his rookie try at detective novels!

King is walking in detective shoes!

This book was great! I had first planned on purchasing Stephen King's newest book, Finders Keeper's, but saw that Finders Keepers was sort of a prequel to Mr. Mercedes. So, I purchased both. I began reading Mr. Mercedes and was instantly drawn into the story. It had a great storyline and I thought the pace of the story was perfect. This book kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. I didn't want to put it down. I just had to continue reading so that I could find out what was going to happen next. Reading just one more chapter was just not enough. I'd end up reading at least half a dozen more before my eyes refused to hold themselves open any longer. I completed this book in just 2 days! Stephen King has disappointed me a few times in the past with some of his other novels, but this one was definitely not a disappointment. I enjoyed the characters very much and had started to feel as if I knew them personally. I could almost even imagine what they may look like. This book is a definite read for fans of Stephen King's work. You are not going to want to put this book down. Be sure to read his newest book, Finders Keeper's, the Mr. Mercedes book and same characters blend nicely into it. It also was not a let down. Enjoy!

Stephen King does not disappoint in this edge of your seat thriller
to sum: This product is mercedes The score is 4.5, very good, and the quality of the product is also very good. SEE ON AMAZON

I wont review the literary content. I will, however, review the book's quality. This book is obviously a mass produced volume. Rough cut, cheap pages. A few pages had pressed wrinkles. The font is a good size so I wont need my readers. Don't spend too much, I did. There will be plenty in the bargain bin soon. This is a book that you will read and then give away to a friend.

Cheaply made hardcover. Dont spend too much.

I ordered the mass-market Market paperback editon wth two day shipping.I opened it within 10 minutes of receiving it. As soon as I took it out I noticed a rip on the back cover hence the reason for a 4 rating. But since it'sonly on the back cover I'll still keeping read.

Noticed rip immediately upon first glance

Purchased this for my girlfriend's Stephen King collection. It's a simple paperback.

One of the best books I’ve ever read. Completely recommended! It makes you want to read and never stop. So addictive!

The shining by Stephen King is a must-read book!

Bought the book brand new and it came with these tears and folds on the front page and a small fold on the back. :/ would have bought it used or something if I knew it would have came like this. As for the book itself, it's Stephen King doing his thing. The book was great. 3/5 for the damages.

Bought new but came with minor tears

It

Stephen King

There’s an evil lurking in Derry, Maine. It lurks in the storm drains and the sewers. The scary part? The entire town is affected by evil that lives under the city wreaking its havoc upon the town, but only the children can see It. Seven outcasts form a bond in order to defeat It, deeming themselves The Loser’s Club. It, being a creature from out of this world, takes their greatest nightmares and turns them against each child. Thinking they defeated It as children, they lead a life outside of Derry until the murders start happening again. Twenty-seven years later, The Loser’s Club makes their way back to Derry to defeat the evil once and for all.

If you’ve ever read a Stephen King book, you would know his descriptions are vivid and this book is no exception. You wouldn’t believe Derry was a fictional town with the way he describes it. The details make you believe you aren’t just reading about a town, but that you actually have stepped foot right into it. With all the crazy and evil things that happen here, it is not a place I would want to visit. With the way King goes into details, it’s like you are actually in the book right beside the characters as they go through the horrors of every day life of living in Derry. His style definitely works by making you really feel terrified as you read, as if It could actually reach out and grab you at any minute. This is a true horror novel. It is not for the faint at heart. Do not read this at night, especially if you are alone- you will have nightmares.
“…she took her washcloth and leaned over the basin to get some water and the voice came whispering out of the drain: ‘Help me….’”
    -Stephen King, It
I loved the way this book was formatted. It’s not your typical straightforward timeline. The book is split up into 5 parts, alternating between childhood and adulthood in the perspective of every member of The Loser’s Club. Instead of starting out with the childhood perspective, you are thrown right into the perspective of the adults in present-time making you curious as to how each character got to that certain point in their lives. This was an effective writing style making it so you just couldn’t put the book down because you just had to know how everything would come together.
Every character King writes is so realistic. You either love them or hate them. I just fell in love with every character that was part of The Loser’s Club. Each had their own personality and quirks and that’s what made you love them even more. They seemed so real; like they could be your friend. Same goes for the bad characters. He writes them so descriptively that you just can’t help but hate them with everything you have. Some characters in this story were so demented. Pennywise (the clown) was so scary and creepy. The descriptors that King uses couldn’t be anymore perfect. Character personality, growth, and development get an A+ from me.
“Can an entire city be haunted?”
    –Stephen King, It
This novel wouldn’t be what it is without the addition of the Derry Interludes at the end of every part. The interludes, in my opinion, are what made the book so terrifying. They detail all the past horrors that have happened in Derry and have basically been ignored and forgotten. This is where you really see the true evil nature It brings upon this town. I could read an entire novel just on the basis of the history of Derry, Maine. So interesting, yet so horrifying.
Now for my dislikes. One thing that bothered me about this whole book of amazingness is the amount of detail. I know, I know, I just went on and on how I loved all of King’s brilliant descriptions, but at some parts they seemed to become unnecessary. I got bored at some of the parts that I was just not interested in. For example, the description of Stan’s wife’s life. She wasn’t a major part of the storyline; therefore, I really didn’t care to hear about her life. I thought some parts like the one I just described could have been cut out entirely. Also I feel the need to mention one specific scene that just did not sit well with me, mainly because the ages of the characters at this point in the novel. I’m not going to go into detail about it because after all this is a spoiler-free review, but I do believe this one scene was just absolutely disgusting. If you’ve read the book, you know what scene I’m talking about. The scene that brings The Loser’s together. (Sorry for the vague description!) Besides that, I have no complaints of this brilliantly written book. I was hooked from beginning to end. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of Stephen King or fans of horror novels.

takes their greatest nightmares and turns them against each child

My favorite book of all time. I've read 14 times and who knows how many more times I'll read it again! King creates a world where you feel the eyes of a being of unimaginable horror on you as you follow the lives of a group of childeren who come together to face a creature that has haunted their town and hunted it's children for years upon years. You will not find a better book that creates such a electric tingling atmosphere that you will catch yourself reading way past the hour you said you would put it down at.

We all float down here....and so will you!

This is such a huge book for real. The pages have this nice soft feel. I've owned several SK books but speacially this one caught my attention for the first time when I was 16 years old. I still own the paperback edition but I went only trough several chapters because the presentation (in my opinion) was hard to read the words very tiny, so I never finished it. I was looking for a hardcover edition but I wasn't lucky enough to find one. Now I shall thank the upcoming movie for bringing up the book again specially in this edition that to my sight is a lot better to read. Now it is time to start again this amazing story.

What I expected. What I expected. What I expected.

This is by far Stephen King's best novel! It has all of the elements that Stephen King could imagine to scare generations of his dedicated readers. It is one of his largest novels to date and if you are looking for an excellent option to reading it yourself, I suggest that you get the Audible version. Narrated by the amazing Steven Webber, he brings a life to the pages that will have you on the edge of you seat. You will find yourself listening to IT over and over again.

The story is long but engaging, you spend so much time with the characters you develop some affection and you can root for them and know their personalities. The antagonist is good but I was more scared of the human villains. The ending was great but there are one scene I feel was just for shock.
In the end I felt relieved for the characters because at least they can be happy. I wouldn't buy this for children.

Nice sized book with new book jacket as displayed on Amazon page. Text is not too small, as some other reviews stated, and material is of good quality as far as I can tell.

Product arrived with light creases on the book and book jacket because it had no bubble wrap or styrofoam to hold it in place in the shipping box. Also noticed a couple light stains on the bottom of the book and book jacket, but negligible.

Overall, very pleased with purchase. A little more care with the book would earn 5 stars.

    The King of Horror!

slightly dirty what I can say is the book is great pages are great everything's in great order and condition the only problem i I can maybe order a new sleeve other than that it's a great book except for that problem is the blackish scuff on the lower left hand corner but that's nothing that either a new jacket can fix or at least a clear book cover to keep the rest of the thing clean but I'm very pleased with this book and I hope it's a better written than its appearance so thank you for shipping my order out

Great book slightly dirty only problem very happy Great book slightly dirty only problem very happy

I was super excited to recieve my package in the mail today. Even though I'm still excited to read my copy, I am disappointed that it came a bit damaged. Ofcourse it won't affect how much I love the book, and I still get a hard copy for a good price!

    8/7/2017 - Hardcover

Nice sized book with new book jacket as displayed on Amazon page. Text is not too small, as some other reviews stated, and material is of good quality as far as I can tell.

Product arrived with light creases on the book and book jacket because it had no bubble wrap or styrofoam to hold it in place in the shipping box. Also noticed a couple light stains on the bottom of the book and book jacket, but negligible.

Overall, very pleased with purchase. A little more care with the book would earn 5 stars.

Great buy! A little more care would rate 5. Great buy! A little more care would rate 5. Great buy! A little more care would rate 5.

What's not to love about It? It has all the scariest monsters, it IS your deepest fears, and it preys on children. A Stephen King classic that grabs your imagination and doesn't let go.

I haven't read the book yet.
Dislike the shoddy job Scribner did.
Didn't properly set the manuscript into the hard cover.

I just want to give a heads up to those expecting a traditional sized King novel. Here are a couple of pictures comparing it to a previous book. FYI- the two stars is for the story, not for the size

    “Novel” “Novel”

Elevation took me a minute because I was expecting a novel; one of those deep dives into the depths of the human soul that King does so well and so effortlessly. And the problem with buying a Kindle version of a story is that you don't often notice how "big" the book is, or how long. Elevation is either a short novella or a long short story, but either way, it's a refreshing change from normal King fare because there's no monster. That's right, King returns to his infamous Castle Rock and there's no ancient evil, no lurking abyss looking back at you; there's just a guy, Scott Carey, who's losing weight in a way he can't explain. Is it supernatural? In that it can't be explained by science, yes, but that's not the important part of the story. The important part of the story is the friendships Scott develops as he struggles with his affliction and the stand he takes against small town bigotry and the difference one man can make in the life of another person or a whole town. This is King writing in the vein of The Body, where the macabre elements of the story take a back seat to the wonders of the human condition and it's definitely worth reading. It's short, especially for King, but you'll be thinking about it for days after you read it.

A Shorter Story that Still Packs a Wallop

This 1-star rating is due to the product itself, not the content of the book. The book is a great quick read, but unfortunately I had to buy a second copy from my local bookseller due to a binding issue. The copy Amazon sent me went pages 1-56, then skips back to 25-56, then 89-. So I'm essentially missing the middle chunk of a very short book and am unable to return/exchange it.
Long story short, King's writing is great but maybe don't buy it from an online retailer where you can't flip through the book prior to purchase.

Binding error, better to buy from your local book store Binding error, better to buy from your local book store

    Only 144 pages

    1 stars

If I had read this book not knowing who the author was I would have never guessed it was King. It’s a tiny book,
Only 144 pages and it has no substance and no familiarity. The ending left no question answered. It was a really disappointing read and not a typical King book.

Only 144 pages Only 144 pages

This short book it’s probably worth your time, but it leaves enough open questions that it can be a bit unsatisfying at the end. King does have a few things to say about the nature of friendship and how defensive and unfriendly people may not be as bad as they initially seem so that is certainly a positive message. It further has a few insights about how you can best face your own death. Also, on the audio cd, there is an additional short story about a widower who is given a dog. If you like dogs, which most of us do, you should enjoy this story. In general though I think King does much better with longer books than either short books or short stories. He is so good at developing characters and building suspense in a longer book and it’s difficult to do that in something shorter.

Good but a little unsatisfying in the end.

Short story marketed as a novel.
    Small book (146 7"x5" pages)
I've read much better by King.
This is kind of a cheap trick.

Very disappointed. I wanted to love this book.

Maybe it is a Stephen King trick of sorts? Well, this is a first. Imagine my surprise as I’m reading and come upon pages 25-56 a SECOND time, starting where page 57 should be. The book is missing pages 57-88.
And it only has 146 pages total, so that’s a good deal of story to miss. Lol.

    Wow! Pages repeated and missing.

Started reading the book and then all of a sudden it was repeated. Probably a printing error but still a bummer. Half the story is missing. It was a decent read until that happened.

This is a great book by Stephen King. I read it a while back and I'm glad I finally got my own copy of it. It's a definite buy for any Stephen King or horror fan.

Great book, easily my favorite Stephen King novel and the first one I ever read. This edition features black and white photos from the creepy 1979 TV miniseries, which makes it a definite plus for fans of both. There are some really horrifying pics of the master vampire in here!

Great book, this edition has photos! Great book, this edition has photos!

This story is a children's school reading version, retold by a different author!! So odd and misleading not to say this in the description. See photo.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband and he finally got around to reading it only to find 33 pages missing from the center of the book!
