I've read every book in the Pendergast series up to this one, and this is the first time that I have found myself thoroughly disappointed. In general, the Pendergast books are fantastic at their best and still a fun romp at their worst. This book, however, was actually hard to finish. The plot isn't terrible through most of the book, but it's not great either. Where the story falls off a cliff is at the end. I'm not a writer by any means, and I could have imagined and written a better conclusion than the ridiculous contrivance that not only ruins the otherwise OK book but actually manages to diminish the previous entries in the series. The poorly written comic book villain proves Pendergast's greatest challenge yet? Diogenes didn't disappear into exile. He's hiding in shame.
